Gen Z will find jobs thanks to TikTok

The popular video app is testing the introduction of a job application tool that will allow users to directly submit their video CVs to companies. The platform has already completed the pilot test, and is now expected to officially launch.

 

Video CVs are common in some sectors, such as audiovisual and journalism. Through social networks, content creators in Catalonia have accustomed us to ask for jobs with original threads and videos. Some have even gone viral, as in the case of journalist Enzo Vizcaíno. Now, TikTok is taking another step towards making this trend a reality throughout the labour market.

Although the purpose of TikTok is for users to share short videos focused on entertainment, the impact it has gained in recent years as a social network is causing its creators to rethink its functions. With this aim in mind, in June they launched a pilot test of TikTok Resumes, a new platform that would put employers and workers in contact with each other through original, visual CVs.

In fact, the idea came about as a result of the hashtag #CareerTok, which has been circulating on the social network for some time now, and the demand from companies, who see the young people who use the platform as an opportunity to expand their workforces with creative profiles. More than 30 companies, including Chipotle, Target and Shopify, signed up for the TikTok pilot.

 

The influencer, the most sought-after profile

In the video that TikTok circulated during the pilot test, the platform recommended users to make a video of just over three minutes that summarised their passions and interests, but did not include any contact details. “These are some of the reasons why you should hire me…”, “Let me tell you a few things about me…” or “These are some of the things I can do to improve your company…” were the suggested opening sentences. 

The truth is that companies were mainly looking for user profiles that were capable of generating corporate content within TikTok itself. And all this leads us to suspect that brands are interested in finding experienced influencers to help them connect with younger audiences. In fact, many companies are already hiring these superstars to promote their products. We will have to wait and see if TikTok really becomes the new LinkedIn for Gen Z.
