Eventually, feudalism prevailed. The new feudal lords – lay and ecclesiastical – at the end of the 11th century forced free peasants to remain tied to the land and demanded that they produce a surplus of their labor through violence. This new paradigm of production led to the brutal indebtedness of a large part of the population, who gradually lost their freedom of choice.
