But reality is different. Behind every economic proposal lies a particular way of understanding how society works. <\/b><b>Economics is a social science. And, like all social sciences, it is made up of different schools of thought that interpret reality from different perspectives.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more than three hundred years, these schools have attempted to answer the same questions: <\/span><b>what creates wealth, what role the State should play, why crises occur, and how they should be addressed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each school is a product of its time. <\/span><b>Mercantilism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged when the European monarchies competed for world trade; <\/span><b>Adam Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote during the Industrial Revolution; <\/span><b>Karl Marx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> observed the harsh conditions of nineteenth-century workers; <\/span><b>John Maynard Keynes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sought to explain the Great Depression; <\/span><b>Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reacted to the inflation of the 1970s. What is most remarkable is that none of these schools has disappeared. An economy may produce a great deal, but if households and businesses stop consuming, factories come to a halt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Austrian and Monetarist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> economists, sustainable growth requires saving, productive investment, entrepreneurial initiative and a stable currency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What role should the state play?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where <\/span><b>the best-known <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differences emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mercantilists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocated strong governments that directed trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Classical economists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preferred to limit the State to basic functions such as justice, security and infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> envisioned an economy in which the principal means of production were collectively owned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keynes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believed that, during recessions, the State should stimulate demand and prevent economic activity from collapsing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, <\/span><b>Hayek<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warned that excessive intervention could reduce economic freedom and generate new inefficiencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Milton Friedman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shared this caution, although he accepted a limited role for the State in ensuring stable rules and a consistent monetary policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why do crises occur?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same recession can generate <\/span><b>completely different diagnoses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Marx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, crises are part of the very functioning of capitalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>Keynes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are the result of a decline in consumption and investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Austrian economists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attribute them to excessive credit expansion and artificially low interest rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Monetarists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasise mistakes in monetary policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Classical economists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to interpret them as adjustment processes that markets eventually correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How should inflation be fought?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few issues generate as <\/span><b>much controversy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as this one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keynesians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accept that moderate inflation may be acceptable if it prevents a deep recession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Milton Friedman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that \u201cinflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon,\u201d that is, the consequence of an excessive amount of money in circulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Austrian School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shares much of this diagnosis, but places the main responsibility on the artificial expansion of credit driven by central banks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Classical economists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trust that competition and market adjustments will eventually moderate prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marxists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by contrast, tend to interpret inflation within the framework of distributional conflicts between wages, profits and economic power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The new schools: Economics continues to evolve<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The classical schools remain essential for understanding economics, but <\/span><b>the new challenges of the twenty-first century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have given rise to schools of thought that incorporate factors which previously played only a secondary role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Behavioural economics: we do not always make rational decisions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For decades, it was assumed that people made <\/span><b>rational<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decisions. <\/span><b>Daniel Kahneman and Richard Thaler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrated that cognitive biases, <\/span><b>emotions and habits influence many economic decisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This discipline has influenced the design of savings plans, pension systems, taxation and public policies based on the so-called nudges\u2014<\/span><b>small incentives that guide behaviour without imposing it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Institutional economics: Institutions matter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do some countries prosper while others remain stagnant despite <\/span><b>possessing abundant natural resources?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economists such as <\/span><b>Douglass North, Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argue that the answer lies in <\/span><b>the quality of institutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Legal certainty, the protection of property rights, judicial independence and the fight against corruption are factors that are just as important as capital and labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Modern monetary theory (MMT): A new debate on public debt<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern Monetary Theory argues that <\/span><b>a State which issues its own currency has far greater room for manoeuvre than has traditionally been assumed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to this school, the main constraint on public spending is not the budget deficit, but <\/span><b>inflation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its supporters argue that this approach <\/span><b>makes it possible to deal more effectively with major public investments or economic crises<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its critics <\/span><b>warn that it could encourage the excessive creation of money and fuel inflationary pressures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate remains open and is one of the most active in contemporary economics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>An ongoing conversation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economics is not a collection of <\/span><b>infallible recipes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a conversation that has lasted for more than three centuries and continues to evolve with every social, technological and political transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No school has succeeded in explaining <\/span><b>the whole of reality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but each has provided tools for understanding part of the world. For this reason, when we hear an economist defending a particular fiscal, monetary or social policy, it is worth asking not only what they are proposing, but also from <\/span><b>which school of thought they are speaking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Understanding these traditions does not guarantee that we will always find the correct answer, but it does allow us to interpret, with greater judgement, the debates that shape our savings, our investments and the future of the economy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Protecting savings with physical gold has been one of 11Onze&#8217;s greatest contributions to its community, and its range of products continues to expand.
