Gold’s unique properties are not only useful here on Earth. They have also proved essential for exploring <\/span>space<\/b>. When an astronaut steps outside the International Space Station, they face some of the harshest conditions imaginable. Without Earth’s atmosphere, solar radiation is far more intense, and temperatures can fluctuate by hundreds of degrees within minutes. That is why <\/span>the visors of space helmets<\/b> are coated with an ultra-thin layer of gold that is almost invisible. Its purpose is <\/span>to reflect much of the Sun’s infrared radiation, reducing heat build-up inside the helmet while protecting the astronaut’s eyes from the intense sunlight<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same principle applies <\/span>to satellites<\/b>. Many are equipped with gold-coated components that shield highly sensitive electronic systems. In orbit, the same surface can exceed 120 \u00b0C (248 \u00b0F) in direct sunlight and drop below -150 \u00b0C (-238 \u00b0F) when passing into Earth’s shadow. <\/span>Gold’s ability to reflect heat helps keep these systems operating within safe temperature limits<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most remarkable examples is the <\/span>James Webb<\/b><\/a> Space Telescope. Its eighteen hexagonal mirrors are coated with <\/span>a layer of gold<\/b> only a few hundredths of a micron thick.
