El Canut launch from inside
The launch of the app was led by 11Onze COO Darren Smith, with the whole team accompanying him.
Morning of 1 October 2021. A business club in Barcelona, The Wild Bunch, hosts the 11Onze team directly involved in the launch of El Canut. The day is led by 11Onze COO Darren Smith, who monitors all the news and shares them on a large screen.
Around a six by two meters white table, all department heads are gathering. From marketing to product, branding, finance, art, content, PR, risk, and technology. Everything must work smoothly. It has taken months and months of work to reach this moment: the day when the first 11Onze bank accounts are being opened.
“We are ready”
The whole team connects by videoconference to go over the last details before going live. Tension and nervousness are palpable, but also the desire to start responding to users of La Plaça with El Canut ready.. There is a lot of expectation with 11Onze. “There is a lot of disappointment around the banking sector,” explains marketing manager Gemma Vallet, “and people know that we are here to do things differently”.
“We can start, we’re ready,” announces Darren. Everything is on time. At 11:11am, the first registered Fem Cua users are mailed and given exclusive access to the application. Agents are ready to accompany customers through the process of downloading and configuring El Canut. Each new registration appears on the screen and is celebrated by the team. “This user has done the process in no more than three minutes, that’s great,” explains back office manager Iu Alemany.
But difficulties also arise: “There is a user who cannot finish his verification process because his DNI address does not match with the one he had written down”, explains Marifé Fariñas, from the back office team. The process to resolve the incident and open the account is immediately set in motion.
The first step to the summit
The machine cannot stop. Registrations are being completed and doubts are being resolved. Articles in La Plaça announcing the launch of 11Onze have plenty of comments. Some people are angry. Some people are happy. There are users who respond to other users. The community is alive. This is it!
The team is eating, some standing and checking that everything works well. Only after it is clear that 11Onze is running smoothly, the operations manager says goodbye. “If you don’t mind, I’m going to have a rest. The last days have been very intense. Darren Smith leaves The Wild Bunch with his homework done. Over the course of his career, he has helped to set up more than 100 banks and financial institutions. But this one is different. This is a fincom specifically designed to help a community.
During the afternoon, the head of operations sends a message to the whole team: “There were many who said it couldn’t be done. There were even those who said this day would never come. Still, we are together at the foot of the mountain. We have already made our first step towards the summit. What a team! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your work and the trust you have placed in me”.
In chapter 2 of the documentary L’Academy, Darren explained that 11Onze would be his “last son”. Now, this child has already begun to walk and Darren Smith, with all his expertise and drive, is going to help it grow up.
